About the volo’s guide to monsters

Monsters are the heart of this book, in this book you can know that where monsters live, how they think, how they might befriend you, and how they might harm you.

In chapter 1, the authors dive into the stories of some of the monstrous groups presented in the d&d 5e monster manual.

Then, chapter 2 supplements the race options in the d&d 5e player’s handbook.

Chapter 3 introduces a host of monsters and their stat blocks.

The books also include Appendix A which provides a few new monsters. Appendix B which is stocked with nonplayer characters to populate your D&D adventures. Appendix C lets you look up stat blocks in this book by challenge rating, creature type, and environment.

What are sprinkled throughout the book are observations and musings from two denizens of the Forgotten Realms: the legendary explorer Volothamp Geddarm (Volo to his friends) and the Archmage of Shadowdale himself, El minster Aumar.

For the benefit of DMs and players everywhere, Volo and Elminster share their insights with regard to some of the monsters found herein. And their words hold a measure of truth regardless of the Dungeons and Dragons world in which these monsters are met.

Reason #2

Th the volo’s guide to monsters discusses monster knowledge in-depth, focusing on Beholders, Giants, Gnolls, Goblinoids, Hags, Kobolds, Mind Flayers, Orcs, and Yuan-ti. It’s very big research work.

There’re multiple pages that provide variants, tables, lairs, historical background. And even some of the psychology of the creatures that can really help you flesh out these types of creatures in the game. It’s very helpful to improve the experience of dnd 5e games.

Reason #3

This really is a great version, and I especially like these new races include tips on how to role-play as these slightly more unique creature types. These new races breathe a lot of new life into campaigns for players who might get tired of the guides from the Player’s Handbook.

Reason #4

6 new Monstrous Player Character races covered. The 6 Player Character races represented are Bugbear, Goblin, Hobgoblin, Kobold, Orc, and Yuan-ti Pureblood. They absolutely could provide some fantastic adventures for the right group of players.

An expanded monster covered, one part of the book is dedicated to new monsters in the dnd 5e games. They’re an excellent variety of new creatures, and some of them didn’t in the original Monster Manual.
