Eclipse Foundation will succeed Oracle as the new owner of Java EE, and Oracle will no longer manage Java EE.
As part of the adoption, Java EE may change its new name, and Oracle suggests using Java EE in its recommendation.
A month ago, Oracle said it would end the management role of Java EE and move it to open source infrastructure. After consulting with IBM and Red Hat and other Java partners, Oracle held talks with several foundations and identified an organization with a long history in Java development: the Eclipse foundation,
Eclipse created the popular Eclipse IDE and managed several other Java technologies.
Oracle draws on Eclipse’s experience in Java, EE, and related technologies, so it transfers Java EE to Eclipse.
Oracle David Delabassee said: “this will help us quickly transition Java EE, create community friendly processes for the development platform, and use micro configuration and other ancillary projects.”.”
Last year, after some members of the Java community feared that Oracle had ignored the platform, MicroProfile became a Red, Hat, and IBM driver effort to accommodate Java EE’s Micro service capabilities. MicroProfile has moved to Eclipse.
“Moving Java EE to open governance and collaboration is going to be a process, not an event,” says Eclipse managing director Mike Milinkovich.”
“our early discussions with Oracle, IBM, and Red Hat have shown that many of them support this in their leadership team.”
Milinkovich also agrees with Oracle’s modifications to the Java EE to better support cloud computing. “As companies turn to cloud centric models, it is clear that Java EE needs faster innovation.”
Oracle recently improved its recommendation for adoption of Java EE:
1, define the brand strategy of the platform, including the new name of Java EE that has not yet been determined.
2, re – authorize the Java EE and related GlassFish application server technology to the adopted foundation. (GlassFish has been implemented as a Java EE reference. )
3 demonstrates the ability to provide Java EE compatible implementation.
4, define the process in which existing specifications can evolve, and Java EE must be developed in the Java community process.
5. Recruit developers and others to sponsor platform technologies.
Java EE is built on the Java platform, the Standard Version (Java SE), for large-scale, multi-layered and secure network applications. Java EE 8 will soon appear.
Oracle will continue to support existing Java EE licensees, including those licensed to migrate to Java EE 8. It will also continue to support the WebLogic server Java application server obtained from the BEA system ten years ago, and Java EE 8 will be supported in the upcoming WebLogic Server upgrade.
Oracle is also keeping its leadership position on Java SE, and recently made plans to speed up Java9’s release.
